New parking system at Sainsbury’s in Redhill: what shoppers need to know

By Surrey Extra Redhill

Shoppers at Sainsbury’s in Redhill are getting used to a new way of parking, and the rules depend entirely on how long you stay.

Under the arrangements now in place at the store’s car park, drivers staying under one hour do not need to visit the pay station at all. Anyone staying longer than an hour has to enter their vehicle registration at the machine — and can claim the cost back at the checkout if they spend enough in store.

The details below are taken from the information displayed at the car park itself. Signage can change, so it is always worth reading the notices at the machine before you leave your car.

How the new system works

Staying under one hour:

  • There is no need to visit the pay station.
  • Park, shop and go as normal.

Staying over one hour:

  • Enter your vehicle registration at the pay station.
  • Pay for your parking and collect a refund voucher.
  • There is no need to display a ticket in your vehicle.
  • The machine does not give change, so exact amounts are needed.

Because the system works from your registration rather than a ticket on the dashboard, the number plate you type in has to be right. It is worth checking it before you walk away from the machine.

Getting your parking refunded

Drivers who pay for a longer stay can get that money back if they spend in store.

Spend £10 or more at Sainsbury’s and the parking fee can be refunded at the checkout, on production of the voucher collected from the pay station. Keep hold of the voucher — without it there is nothing to present at the till.

Delivery riders have moved out of the town centre

The car park has also become the backdrop to a second parking story.

Since the new Restricted Parking Zone came into force in Redhill town centre, delivery riders waiting for orders in the pedestrian area have been receiving Penalty Charge Notices. Several riders have since been seen gathered outside Sainsbury’s instead, near the cycle parking area.

It is a practical response to the new restrictions rather than an official arrangement, and it is not clear how long it will last.
