Redhill heartbroken as Argentina snatch World Cup semi-final in stoppage time
England were 35 minutes from a first World Cup final since 1966. Redhill watched two late Argentina goals take it away — but the Three Lions aren’t done yet.
Redhill was left heartbroken on Wednesday night as England’s World Cup final dream slipped away in stoppage time, Argentina scoring twice in the last five minutes to win their semi-final 2–1.
Across pubs, homes and local venues in Redhill and the surrounding area, fans watched on in hope as England battled for a place in the final — the country’s first since 1966. Anthony Gordon put England ahead just before the hour, and for half an hour Redhill dared to believe.
It unravelled late. Enzo Fernández levelled with five minutes left, and Lautaro Martínez struck the winner deep into injury time, both goals created by Lionel Messi. The defending champions had found a way through again.
The result ended England’s hopes of lifting the trophy, with emotions running high as supporters reflected on a tournament that promised so much and came so close.
England were 35 minutes from the final. Then Messi went to work.
Social media was quickly flooded with reactions from local fans, ranging from disappointment and frustration to pride in the team’s efforts throughout the competition. Many described the defeat as “heartbreaking”, while others praised England for taking the eventual finalists to the very last kick.
And England’s tournament isn’t over. Gareth Southgate’s side face France in the third-place play-off on Saturday, giving Redhill one more chance to get behind the Three Lions before the summer ends. Argentina meet Spain in Sunday’s final — Messi against Lamine Yamal, for the first time on this stage.
