Anyone who has walked through Redhill town centre lately will have noticed how much of it has changed in a short space of time.

Lloyds Bank has closed. The Post Office inside the Belfry Shopping Centre is due to close. Other businesses have shut up shop or moved away altogether, and more than one window is now papered with yellow closing-down posters.

Everyday places, one by one

For people living in Redhill, Reigate, Merstham, Earlswood, South Nutfield, Horley, Salfords, Bletchingley and across East Surrey, these are not abstract retail statistics. They are the places where you paid in cash, collected a parcel, popped into the bank, or arranged to meet someone.

Each closure on its own is a business decision. Together they add up to a town centre that does a noticeably smaller number of everyday jobs than it did a couple of years ago.

Surrey Extra has not been told what will replace the units that have emptied, or whether the Belfry Post Office counter will reopen elsewhere in the town.
