New bollards installed in Redhill town centre to stop cars using pedestrian route
New steel bollards near Papa John’s and Posadero Lounge have created a physical barrier between Marketfield Road and the pedestrian route to the High Street — closing a shortcut used by drivers, while keeping the way clear for pedestrians, wheelchairs, mobility scooters and bikes.
New bollards have been installed in Redhill town centre near Papa John’s and Posadero Lounge, closing off a pedestrian route that some drivers had been using as a shortcut between Marketfield Road, the High Street and surrounding roads.
The stainless steel bollards have been positioned across the access point to stop motorists driving through the pedestrianised section of the town centre — an area intended primarily for people on foot.
The spacing between the bollards keeps the route open for pedestrians, wheelchairs and mobility scooters, and still allows bicycles and e-bikes to pass through.
The new bollards are expected to stop cars — but they do not physically prevent smaller two-wheeled vehicles from entering the pedestrian zone.
Some residents have previously raised concerns about riders travelling through the pedestrian area, particularly during busy periods when shoppers and families are using the town centre. While the barriers rule out cars, mopeds and other small two-wheeled vehicles can still fit through the gaps.
The installation is the latest visible change in Redhill town centre, where measures have been introduced in recent years to improve pedestrian safety and manage vehicle access around the Marketfield Road development — one of the town’s busiest shopping and leisure areas.
Residents and visitors are now likely to notice the new barriers outside Papa John’s and close to Posadero Lounge. Do you think they will improve safety in the town centre? Let us know on Instagram.
Where the new bollards are
The barriers run across the access point on the Marketfield Road side, where vehicles were previously able to drive onto the pedestrianised route.
